WWU Faculty Call on Administration to Meet Student Demands
Dear President Randhawa, Provost Johnson, and WWU Board of Trustees,
Students on college campuses across the country are demanding that their institutions live up to the values they claim to uphold. On May 3, 2024, a diverse coalition of Western Washington University (WWU) student organizations, led by WWU’s Jewish Voice for Peace and Arab Student Association, presented you with a list of demands. Students are calling on WWU to financially divest from genocide, invest in decolonial education, and actively address the harm that the university has inflicted upon Arab and Arab American students on campus. As faculty, we write in support of our students and urge you to meet their demands.
See rest of the demands at end of list

Divestment is not a new phenomenon. In response to student-led movements in the 1980s, universities across the country cut ties with companies that supported South Africa’s apartheid regime. Many universities, including Harvard, Michigan, and the University of California system, have also committed to divesting their endowment from the fossil fuel industry. Most recently, Washington’s Evergreen State College became the first U.S. university to commit to divesting from “companies that profit from gross human rights violations and/or the occupation of Palestinian territories.” This comes on the heels of Brown and Northwestern University agreeing to disclose their financial investments.
At WWU, students have a long history of effecting change. It was student activism that led to, among other things, the creation of the Multicultural Center, the Ethnic Student Center, the WWU House of Healing, and the Department of Ethnic Studies. Now, students are demanding “an education that does not fund genocide, apartheid, or war.” We stand with them in unwavering solidarity as they join a nationwide movement on college campuses and a global movement for Palestinian liberation. We therefore ask you to set into motion a speedy process to meet student demands, while upholding academic freedom and free speech on campus, and protecting all students from violence or retaliation.
As WWU faculty, we have the great privilege of working with students on a daily basis. We have witnessed their commitment to education and community, their ethic of care, and their steadfast dedication to ending the Israeli genocide on Palestinians. As an institution, WWU encourages students to “make waves” and prides itself on fostering a “commitment to equity and justice, and respect for the rights and dignity of others.” Indeed, WWU’s Strategic Plan, approved by the Board of Trustees, envisions WWU as an institution that will “support and strengthen curricula and other programming that engage issues of access, equity, power, and privilege.” We call on WWU administrators to honor these values by meeting students’ demands.
Washington really does suck. Make America great again! Make Washington great again! I ♥️ Israel.
this list of Jew haters and terrorist barbarian lovers is the true list of the marxist left who hate America while backing and supporting baby killing thugs and jihadi criminals – the worst of the worst !! what you support and back might be who you really are !
I reported them for this and for their DEI policies to my federal government. I have zero state and local representative due to voter fraud, the civil war with the ineffective and broken GOP and MAGA conservatives, so this is the best I can do.
Western has been nothing but a holding pen for decades. Once back 75 years we had an excellent ed department producing great teachers. But even by the 880’s that quality was laughed at by those hiring.
There’s a loss of knowledge for those attending Western these days.
This list is a good start of a review of which departments to eliminate or cut out of the bloated budget.
Someone needs to remind these delicate geniuses that they are CIVIL SERVANTS, and thereby need to keep their own view & political opinions OUT of their respective jobs at a PUBLIC UNIVERSITY. This indoctrination mill remains unchecked, and there needs to be consequences for these vile anti-Israel/anti-Jewish preening. Not acceptable. TAXPAYERS fund the Little Castle on the Hill, and I’ll be damned if those dollars are abused by these so called “Professors”. Enough is enough.
Those who are currently anti Isael, and anti Christian are hiding behind a lack of honesty. Yes, in America we can voice our beliefs, but that does not mean everyone is telling the truth or willing to allow the truth to be told. Israel did not start the current violence. Hamas hates Israel and hates America.
Israel was not the country that attacked and murdered, raped and tortured dozens upon dozens of innocent citizens, including very young children and babies. Get your facts straight.
My dad was a professor at Western for 35 years and would have been sickened by this. Where is the outrage over the war in Ukraine? Killings recently in Syria, Congo, Nigeria, China’s persecution of people groups and religious groups? I am a grad of WWU as are many friends who would be appalled by this. So the Holocaust wasn’t enough for them. Forcing out the Jews of all Moslem countries wasn’t enough for them. Little tiny Israel historical Judea and Samaria not to be allowed for the small group of Jews that have survived the world’s hate over the centuries. How about a boycott of Iran, Yemen, Syria? Scandalous and shows astounding ignorance.
Who is in charge at WWU? Apparently it is the students.
WWU faculty members who signed these DEMANDs have actually voiced support to destroy the people of Israel.
Student demands for “dedication to ending the Israeli genocide on Palestinians” omit the Hamas massacre, torture and mutilation of over 1,100 people in the Gaza strip. Israel did not start this war.
WWU administrators would be wise to follow the consequences of “Student” demands from universities such Columbia, Harvard, Stanford.
Not that these names & titles have any more import than an equal number drawn at random from a bunch of U.S. phone books…..
