My name is Michelle Simmons. I’m running for Meridian School Board. As the 4th generation of a Hispanic Laurel Farming Family, an Alumni, and 30-year community volunteer, I’m here to support our community through action – focused on Accountability, Communication and Transparency – in educational excellence and student safety.
Recent years have escalated my concerns for Meridian as educator and employer. We have not seen a rebound from the COVID impact, with students and staff requiring additional support from para-educators, special education, mental health, and facility improvements. We need to adapt to today’s students and recognize their toolbox for success may look different than prior years.
I will advocate for parental rights, respecting diversity in our community. When state mandates pass – I will act with intention, listening to our families – and collaborating to find the best solution for Meridian.
Our OSPI Scorecard shows ELA, Math and Science standards at less than 46%. I’m prepared to review current policies with a critical eye – focused on improved educational outcomes. Improvements and responsibility of tax dollars requires focused, planned, and measurable approaches.
My background in business development, and collaboration with government representatives, including those with differing backgrounds and affiliations has prepared me for my role on the school board as has my commitment to the Meridian Parent Coalition, our districts Strategic Planning Committee and Facilities Task Force.
I’m ready for ACTION: an exceptional school experience, life preparedness and a sense of belonging for our families.
